Behavior:

Isopods prefer to live on mineral soils, although they are also occasionally found on humus soils. There they can be found under grass, on walls and under stones.

It is a very active species that can be seen constantly in the isopod tank and can therefore also be observed.

Breeding:

Armadillidium versicolor is easy to keep and breed. It is therefore very suitable for beginners. Due to the enormous variety of colors, it is also perfect for very different selections and breeding experiments. The development time of the young isopods is approx. 6 months.

Special features:

Care should be taken to ensure that the breeding container does not become too dry. With this species it is better to spray a little more than with other species. For those who are still relatively new to the hobby, I would therefore recommend starting with a substrate height of 4-5 cm. This will protect the container better from dryness, but also from waterlogging as the relatively high substrate can absorb moisture well and release it relatively slowly.

They love to eat leaves, but sweet potatoes are also very popular. I generally always offer oak or beech leaves and feed them some zucchini, sweet potato, carrot or Chinese cabbage every 3 days. It is best to feed in such a way that the vegetables are eaten after 2 days at the latest.

Tip: As they are very often found on mineral soils in their native habitat, I recommend adding garden lime to the soil substrate. I lightly powder the substrate with it.
