OriginMontenegro
Temperature22-24 °C
Size1.5 cm

Behavior:

Very sociable species that like to gather in small places. It is always a great sight to see how the Isopods sit crammed together under a small piece of dead wood. As soon as they feel disturbed, they roll up in a flash. This can happen just by spraying them with a water sprayer. That’s why I prefer to empty a small sip of water into a corner of the tank. Compared to other Armadillidium species, the Montenegro Isopod can be kept a little drier.

Breeding:

As a rule, Armadillidium klugii “Montenegro” is easy to propagate and the development time is in the medium range of approx. 7 months. The offspring are relatively small and also like to stay in the substrate at the beginning and are therefore not immediately recognizable.

Brief description: This species lives very sociably and can also be stocked quite densely with sufficient hiding places. Breeding this species is easy and even beginners regularly succeed. It is…

Special features:

Armadillidium klugii “Montenegro” can be stocked relatively densely if you offer them plenty of hiding places. A great species for any newcomer, but also an absolute must for experienced isopod keepers in terms of behavior and appearance.

I have found that you can almost completely dispense with protein supplements with this species as they are very rarely ingested and tend to go moldy over time. They also prefer to eat deciduous leaves and dead wood rather than vegetables and fruit. Therefore, a reproduction of a deciduous forest soil is completely sufficient for this species. When the soil turns into fine soil over time, it is time to pimp it up again.

You can repeat this as often as necessary until the substrate has increased and you can start again with a new 2 cm layer of deciduous forest humus.

However, as I do offer protein and vegetables from time to time, probably to ease my own conscience, I have inoculated this species with tropical springtails. These reliably eat the leftover food and possibly also the mold.

Tip: Armadillidium klugii “Montenegro” is also available in the complete Insektenliebe Isopod set.
