Short description Bucephalandra spec. “Giant Catherine”:
This decorative, small Bucephalandra is cultivated in an Indonesian nursery under the trade name “Giant Catherine”. It is not an aquatic plant, but a tropical plant suitable for your terrarium that creates a unique environment. It is characterised by elongated-ovate, about 3.5 cm long, slightly wavy leaves in dark green to brown-red tones, which makes it look great and fits perfectly into the tropical environment of your terrarium.
Because Bucephalandra spec. “Giant Catherine” is a perching plant, you can either mount it on rock or wood. If you place it on the substrate, make sure that the rhizome is not buried to avoid rotting. The Giant Catherine will root itself and benefit from the nutrients in the substrate. Its growth is generally slow to very slow.
The Bucephalandra spec. “Giant Catherine” does well with low light, but develops most beautifully in medium light. It is important to keep the temperature in your terrarium between 20 and 27°C to provide a comfortable climatic environment for the plant. It is best to let it grow undisturbed for a long time, as sudden changes in conditions could cause the leaves to drop. But usually the plants will slowly form new shoots on the rhizome afterwards.
If you wish, you can propagate Bucephalandra spec. ‘Giant Catherine’ by cutting off side shoots or head shoots. This also encourages branching of the shoots and allows you to increase the number of plants in your terrarium.
All in all, Bucephalandra spec. “Giant Catherine” is a fascinating and versatile plant that will create a natural and exotic environment in your terrarium. Its unique appearance and undemanding care requirements make it an ideal addition for you as a terrarium keeper looking for an aesthetically pleasing yet easy to care for plant.
