Porcellio ornatus
Origin:
Spain
Temperature:
20-26 °C
Size:
up to 2,5 cm
Social Behaviour:
Porcellio ornatus is a very active and extrovert isopod kind that must not be missing in any collection. They’re loners but you can see them running around the tank at day or at night.
You should offer them a place to climb in your box. As I said, they’re really active and don’t mind hights as well.
I usually put a branch with some lichen inside the terrarium. You can often find that around fruit trees.
Breeding:
This kind is known to also live from cannibalism. They often eat up their own offsprings, especially in the time of skinning. Still, breeding can be really quick.
Specials:
The nominate form has a grey base with some yellow dots at the back. We succesfully breed a kind with a high amount of yellow. Porcellio Ornatus aren’t very picky when it comes to food and therefore they’re a perfect kind to use as a clean-up crew.
Tipp: Porcellio ornatus need a lot of calcium, that’s why you should make sure to offer enough cuttlebone. You may increase your breeding succes by adding other kinds to the tank as well. That’s how the cannibalism of their own kind gets decreased because they actually do prefer eating the other kinds first. Keep the terrarium rather dry and only put water in one corner.
