Cubaris spec. “Salamon” – rare isopod rarity with fascinating color variations
The Cubaris spec. “Salamon” is still a relatively new and rare species in the terrarium hobby and is becoming increasingly popular with collectors and Isopod enthusiasts. Characteristic of this species is the large Variety of colorsWithin a colony you will find differently colored animals, which can range from light brown to orange to strong purple tones. This makes each terrarium look lively and unique, as no two Isopods are the same.
As for many Cubaris species Typically, the animals can curl up completely in case of danger. This behavior not only protects them in the wild, but also makes them exciting to watch in the terrarium. With a size of around 1.6 centimetres, they are clearly visible without appearing too dominant in the overall picture.
The posture shows Cubaris spec. “Salamon” comparatively robust, but requires a tropical-humid terrarium with plenty of hiding places. A substrate of forest soil, moss, white rotten wood and plenty of leaves is ideal as it provides both food and protection. It is important that the substrate is permanently moist, but does not become waterlogged. The animals feel particularly comfortable if there are different humidity zones in the terrarium – damp areas for hiding and drier corners for moulting.
The animals are uncomplicated in their diet. In addition to dead leaves and wood, they are happy to eat vegetables and isopod food. As with all Isopods, you should always keep a source of calcium such as cuttlefish shell or lime powder, so that the animals can build up their shell optimally.
Cubaris spec. “Salamon” is interesting not only because of its function as a residue recycler and soil police, but above all because of its extraordinary color variations. Each colony develops its own play of colors, which makes keeping these Isopods particularly attractive. So if you want to enrich your terrarium with a rare, visually exciting and at the same time useful isopod species, this is an excellent choice.
