Short description Phidippus bidentatus “Maya”:
Phidippus bidentatus “Maya” is an absolute rarity among jumping spiders and enjoys great popularity in the world of arachnid lovers. Their vivid colours bring a smile to our faces, especially when illuminated by soft light.
These enchanting Phidippus bidentatus “Maya” are native to the deep climes of Mexico and reveal a fascinating variety of hues. Their primary colours range from delicate light browns to deep black, often accompanied by a shimmering green. In addition, they decorate their bodies with elaborate drawings in red, purple or even blue. Their large, alert eyes and beguiling gaze captivate even the most arachnophobic. A sight that makes us pause and become enchanted.
The growth of Phidippus bidentatus “Maya” is slow at first and they only increase in size from FH5/6. In FH3 they are about the size of Phidippus regius “North Florida” or Phidippus cf. regius “Apalachicola” in FH2. These active and bright jumpers are extremely curious and nimble. However, as they get older they become very calm and composed. A fascinating development that changes their personality and behaviour over time.
Besides their impressive eyes, Phidippus bidentatus “Maya” enchant us with their iridescent chelicerae. The males proudly present shades of green, blue or violet, while the females often shine in red, orange or green-violet. On their abdomen they bear striking and elaborate markings. The males are usually a little darker, but many of them still have a subtle, shimmering pattern. The females, on the other hand, surprise us with a wide range of colour variations, from light beige-brown to deep grey. The special thing about the Phidippus bidentatus “Maya” is the iridescent shades of their pattern. Whether green, blue, red or purple – both males and females delight us with breathtaking nuances, whereby the males are often a little more reserved. These delicate jumpers reach an average size of about 1.6 cm and can reach a respectable age of around 1.5 years.
Phidippus bidentatus “Maya” are active jumping spiders that depend on sufficient light and warmth. Unlike other spider species, they do not weave webs to catch their prey. Instead, they actively hunt and therefore need a well-lit environment to successfully capture their food. In order for these fascinating jumping spiders to develop optimally in their terrarium, they depend on temperatures of between 26 and 28 °C. In the upper region of their habitat, the temperatures should ideally be around 28 °C. In addition, the humidity should be around 55-60 % to ensure a pleasant climate.
Sufficient hydration is essential for the healthy development of these jumping spiders. Phidippus bidentatus “Maya” take in liquid through their prey as well as drinking water. On warm days it is recommended to spray them lightly, while in cooler periods spraying every two days is sufficient.
Phidippus bidentatus “Maya” are a real treat for all those who are fascinated by the fascinating world of spiders. Immerse yourself in their colourful splendour and enjoy the variety and beauty they have to offer.
