The Perisphaerus pygmaeus, also known as the Pill Bug Cockroach, is fascinating due to its unique ability to curl up into a small ball when in danger – a behaviour it shares with the native woodlice and which has earned it its nickname.
This cockroach species differs from many others in its unusual preference for higher habitats. Rather than favouring the ground, Perisphaerus pygmaeus have often been observed on branches or tree trunks, where they feed on tree sap. This preference makes them an exciting addition to community terrariums that also harbour other climbing-friendly species such as millipedes.
To fulfil these natural instincts, cork bark provides ideal conditions in the terrarium. They not only allow climbing and hiding, but also simulate the natural environment that Perisphaerus pygmaeus are used to in their native habitat.
This encourages the animals’ natural behaviour and gives them a feeling of safety and security.
Young cockroaches of this species show remarkable curiosity when they hide in bark crevices and explore their surroundings from there. Their diet is varied and ranges from flower pollen and isopod food to fresh fruit such as banana and apple slices. Forage leaves and white rotten wood are also important components of their diet.
Keeping Perisphaerus pygmaeus enriches any exotic pet collection with its interesting behaviour and the ease of observing its activities. This cockroach species not only offers unique insights into the complexity of their way of life, but also a charming and fascinating sight for any exotic animal lover.
