Short description:
Ergaula capucina is a cockroach species from Thailand and Myanmar. The cockroaches have a dark brown ground colour and are decorated with an ochre-coloured wavy line in the middle of the upper side. Another special feature is their behaviour. We have never seen such a calm and serene species. You can put them on your hand or position them for minutes without them feeling disturbed or even fleeing.
Ergaula capucina nymphs like to stay in soil substrate and therefore Flake Soil or a mixture of one part forest humus and one part white rotten wood is an excellent substrate for the animals. In addition, moss can be mixed in to keep the humidity better and more constant. The substrate height of 15 cm is optimal and does not need to be exceeded, as the animals do not dive deeper into the substrate. The substrate should always be kept slightly moist and should never dry out, so re-water once a week. A top layer of food leaves keeps the moisture in the substrate better and is also readily eaten. The substrate also provides the basic food for the animals. Ergaula capucina gladly accepts as additional food anything that is left over from vegetables, fruit or other organic remains. Branches with leaves are readily accepted and at the same time provide the animals with liquid. Protein food should also be offered, as the animals otherwise like to nibble at their wings. This is not a cause for concern, but it looks unattractive and can be avoided.
Breeding is easy and also interesting for keepers who have to feed insects from time to time. Spiders and scorpions gladly accept the nymphs as food and you don’t have to worry about any escaped animals as they dry up after a short time. The nymphs and adult females are not disc walkers unlike the adult males. Therefore an open container is not suitable for housing them. We recommend a terrarium with a trap door or our millipedes complete set as an empty box, Flake Soil as substrate and an individual decoration as a climbing opportunity and shelter for the animals.
