Shelfordella lateralis “Turkestan Cockroach” have a soft chitinous carapace. This is why this species is popular as a food animal for many reptiles, spiders and amphibians. Compared to other food sources such as crickets, it contains a higher proportion of protein, is easier to breed and produces hardly any odour. Therefore, they are becoming increasingly popular among amphibian and reptile lovers. However, they should be handled with care! Shelfordella lateralis “Turkestan Cockroach” also reproduce in the home.

Breeding is very simple and can be easily achieved with a container with a lid and ventilation, egg cartons, protein food and a drinker. Shelfordella lateralis “Turkestan Cockroach” reproduce quickly. The females lay an egg packet in the form of an ootheca every 2-3 weeks. The approx. 30 eggs are well protected in the ootheca. The nymphs are about 3 mm in size and hatch after 2-4 weeks. Depending on the temperature, the nymphs become sexually mature after 4 months.
