Colorful variety: yellow females and green males
Stagmatoptera femoralis originates from the humid regions of Colombia and offers both beginners and experienced terrarium enthusiasts a unique experience.
A particularly interesting feature of Stagmatoptera femoralis is the striking color differentiation between the sexes. While the females stand out with their bright yellow coloration, the males are an intense green. This color differentiation not only makes it easy to distinguish the sexes, but also contributes to the visual attractiveness of this species.
Stagmatoptera femoralis requires a humidity of 60-70% to simulate its natural habitat and ensure optimum living conditions. Regular spraying of the terrarium every 2-3 days helps to maintain this climate. The oothecae are carefully attached to branches and take about six weeks to hatch. These aspects of breeding are uncomplicated, as the species does not show aggression during mating and therefore mating goes smoothly.
Another advantage of Stagmatoptera femoralis is that it can be kept in groups until the pre-subadult stage. This enables social interaction between the animals and offers an interesting insight into their social behavior, which is particularly fascinating to observe in a community terrarium.
In terms of diet, Stagmatoptera femoralis is not particularly demanding. Young animals start with Drosophila melanogaster before switching to Drosophila hydei. Adults can then be fed larger prey such as gold flies and blowflies without any problems. This gradual increase in food size supports healthy growth and reflects the natural diet.
The ideal terrarium for this species should be at least 20x20x30 cm in size to provide sufficient space for climbing and free development of the animals. Such an environment not only promotes the natural behavior of Stagmatoptera femoralis, but also enables stress-free keeping and care.
Keeping the Stagmatoptera femoralis thus offers you an exciting opportunity to gain a deep insight into the life of an extraordinary insect species and to further deepen your interest in natural history.
