Sphodromantis lineola – Active, present and impressive
Sphodromantis lineola is one of the best known and most popular praying mantises in the terrarium hobby. This species originates from large parts of Africa, where it inhabits savannahs, sparse forests and bushy landscapes. It is excellently adapted to warm temperatures and displays a self-confident, active behavior. This is precisely why it is suitable for both beginners and experienced keepers.
Sphodromantis lineola is visually impressive due to its strong stature. Females reach a stately size and look particularly imposing. The basic coloration is usually rich green, but can vary slightly depending on the environment and moult. The strong tentacles, broad head and upright posture make this mantid a real eye-catcher in the terrarium.
Sphodromantis lineola is extremely present in its behavior. It is often clearly visible sitting on branches or plants and observes its surroundings attentively. It shows a pronounced hunting instinct for food. Prey is quickly recognized and grabbed with determination. This species is very resistant to food and accepts crickets, crickets, cockroaches and flies without any problems. This makes it easy to care for.
A well-ventilated terrarium with sufficient height is recommended for keeping them. Climbing branches, twigs and robust plants provide ideal places to sit and hunt. Temperatures between 24 and 30 °C are ideal. It may be slightly cooler at night. Humidity should be moderate (50-60%). Regular spraying provides drinking opportunities and supports moulting.
Sphodromantis lineola is a solitary species. Keeping several animals together leads to cannibalism. Females in particular are territorial. Each animal should therefore be kept individually.
With good care, the animals develop reliably to adult size. The species is considered robust and forgiving of minor husbandry mistakes. This is exactly what makes them so popular. If you are looking for an active, highly visible praying mantis with a strong character, Sphodromantis lineola is an excellent choice.
