Praying Mantis Terrarium Complete Set – Get Started with a 20 × 20 × 30 cm Terrarium

With the Mantid Terrarium Complete Set, you get a tall terrarium that comes with substrate, climbing structures, and lighting. This allows you to put together your setup without having to select each component individually. The key is to make sure the size is appropriate for your mantid species and its stage of development.

What size mantises is this suitable for?

For a single ghost mantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa) with a body length of about 5 cm, a 20 × 20 × 30 cm terrarium is a practical solution. Set up the terrarium so that there is enough open space for molting beneath the upper perches.

This set may also be suitable for smaller young animals of other species. For very small young animals, a compact rearing container is often more practical, as it allows you to better monitor their food intake. Be sure to consider the animal’s actual body size and choose a ventilation mesh with the appropriate mesh size.

For large adult Hierodula females or large orchid mantis females, we recommend a larger, tall terrarium. This set is not a one-size-fits-all, long-term solution for every species of mantis. If you have a growing juvenile, plan ahead for when it will need to be moved to a new enclosure.

Facility with an open molting area

The gauze cover provides support and allows for air circulation. Keep the ventilation areas clear. Under suitable perches, leave at least two body lengths of unobstructed space; more clearance is advisable. Substrate, branches, and plants reduce the usable height.

Forest humus forms the base. The small tree and the river root provide opportunities for climbing and perching. The back wall made of Hobby Terrano moss completes the setup. Secure everything so it stands firmly, and leave some open spaces instead of filling the terrarium completely.

Light and heat suited to the location

Before moving your pet in, check what temperature your species needs and how warm the enclosure actually gets. A built-in heat source is not a reason to provide additional heating if the appropriate temperatures are already being maintained. Follow the lamp’s installation and spacing instructions, and do not place the terrarium in direct sunlight.
