Armadillidium scaberrimum – robust woodlouse for your terrarium

Armadillidium scaberrimum is one of the most robust woodlice we have. Originally from the Mediterranean region, it has established itself as a real all-rounder in terraristics. Its strong physique, characteristically rough shell surface and ability to curl up into a ball at lightning speed make it a fascinating species that is both visually and functionally impressive.

This Isopod is extremely hardy in the terrarium. It prefers a semi-dry climate, but always needs a moist retreat corner to support moulting and the rearing of young animals. A mixture of forest soil, fodder dust and white rotten wood is suitable as a substrate, supplemented with calcium sources such as cuttlebone, as the robust shell of this species requires a lot of lime. With a body size of up to 1.5 centimetres Armadillidium scaberrimum is one of the larger woodlice and is therefore very visible in the terrarium.

Especially in Bioactive setups this species shows its strengths: It reliably decomposes leaves, wood and organic residues and thus makes a significant contribution to the hygiene and stability of the terrarium climate. At the same time, its behavior makes it exciting to observe, as it actively forages for food, but immediately curls up into a ball when threatened. This interplay between activity and protective behavior makes Armadillidium scaberrimum a unique enrichment.

If you are looking for a undemanding, useful and visually eye-catching Isopod is Armadillidium scaberrimum is the right choice. We provide you with healthy, strong offspring that are ideal for beginners, but also give a lot of pleasure to experienced keepers. They are a highlight in any terrarium project and a valuable component for a functioning bioactive terrarium.
