Short description:
Isopoda spec. “Thailand Spiny” originates from southern Thailand, among other places. However, the species has also made it over the Sankarakhiri Mountains and is therefore also found in Malaysia. In this area, the monsoon comes into its own, bringing abundant rainfall all year round from May to October on the west coast and from October to December on the east coast.
Isopoda spec. “Thailand Spiny” is found mainly near ferns. This allows us to draw some conclusions about keeping them in the terrarium. They like it a bit more humid than Cubaris species like Cubaris spec. “Rubber Ducky”. Therefore it makes sense to put a drainage layer in the terrarium. To do this, fill in a 2 cm high layer of clay granulate or gravel as the bottom layer. This prevents waterlogging in the substrate and mould growth. Plants that draw the excess water out of the drainage have proved successful.
The animals eat foliage eagerly and are not picky about what they eat. They like to use hiding places, which also shows the social behaviour of Isopoda spec. “Thailand Spiny”. The young isopods almost stay exclusively under the care of their parents and take little risk to leave the safe hiding place and protection of the adults.
Their spiny appearance makes them a very special isopod species. The entire body structure is also very massive and appears somewhat stocky. Therefore, despite its small overall length, it appears larger than it actually is. So if you think of a small and petite isopod, you are definitely wrong with Isopoda spec. “Thailand Spiny”.
If you meet the humidity requirements, you will have a lot of fun with Isopoda spec. “Thailand Spiny”. The animals can be bred and you can observe the interesting social behaviour. By planting them in the terrarium, you can create a beautiful rainforest terrarium that will be an eye-catcher in any room.
