Short description Brachypelma albiceps:
The Brachypelma albiceps, also known as Brachypelma ruhnaui, is a ground-dwelling tarantula species that has its home in Mexico. These fascinating animals are characterised by an elegant beige-coloured carapace and their abdomen is covered with longer, fiery red hairs. The rest of the spider’s body presents itself in a velvety black. Keeping the fascinating Brachypelma albiceps is uncomplicated and allows tarantula lovers to create a suitable home for these fascinating animals. The Brachypelma albiceps generally prefers a rather dry climate, which means that high humidity should be avoided. It is advisable to choose a terrarium that supports these conditions and provides a suitable microclimate.
For successful husbandry, the Brachypelma albiceps needs various elements in the terrarium. A hiding place is crucial, as the spider needs a sheltered place to feel safe. A half cork tube is a popular option as it gives the spiders enough space to hide and rest. In addition, it is important to provide burrowable soil, as the Brachypelma albiceps likes to dig and create complex tunnel and chamber systems underground. This can be achieved by using a suitable substrate mixture, such as our forest humus and our clayey desert sand.
To meet the spider’s needs for moisture, a water dish must be placed in the terrarium. This should be regularly filled with fresh water to ensure that the Brachypelma albiceps always has access to liquid. In addition, a small damp corner can be set up with some moss to create increased humidity in this area.
The design of the terrarium offers the opportunity not only to meet the functional needs of the Brachypelma albiceps, but also to create an aesthetically pleasing environment. The addition of various roots, wood, artificial plants and stones not only provides hiding and climbing opportunities, but also mimics the spider’s natural habitat. This helps to increase the well-being and quality of life of the Brachypelma albiceps.
It is recommended to choose a terrarium with a sufficient floor space of at least 30×30 cm for an adult female. This gives the spider enough space to move around and act out its natural behaviours. By providing a suitable environment, tarantula keepers can ensure optimal welfare and successful husbandry of the fascinating Brachypelma albiceps. As is typical for Brachypelma species, the growth of Brachypelma albiceps is rather slow. Both males and females of this species often reach sexual maturity only after 6-10 years, and females can even reach an impressive age of over 20 years.
In terms of character, Brachypelma albiceps are characterised by their calm and relaxed nature. They are therefore often considered particularly suitable tarantulas for beginners in invertebrate keeping. These fascinating spiders usually show a balanced behaviour and are not aggressive. They do not tend to bite quickly or behave threateningly even when disturbed. This makes them reliable and easy to handle pets. Another interesting feature of Brachypelma albiceps is that they have stinging hairs, but they use these stinging hairs less often compared to other species of the genus Brachypelma. Stinging hairs are small, fine hairs on the abdomen of the spider that can be shed when threatened and have an irritating effect on the skin and mucous membranes. Although this defensive reaction is not often observed in the Brachypelma albiceps, care should still be taken to avoid irritation.
This gentle and less aggressive nature of the Brachypelma albiceps makes it a great choice for beginners who want to become familiar with keeping tarantulas. With a little patience and understanding, these spiders can become fascinating companions that are comfortable in their environment and happy to show themselves off. In summary, the Brachypelma albiceps is a truly fascinating and exceptionally beautiful tarantula. It shows itself frequently, is robust and also forgives beginner’s mistakes. Thus, it is a great choice for anyone who wants to dive into the fascinating world of spider keeping.
