Spirostreptus spec. 1 are absolutely uncomplicated diplopods to keep. This is consistent from feeding to breeding. They are very fond of white rotten wood (WFH). They sometimes stay there permanently and feed from the inside out. I therefore always offer large pieces of WFH. I also give them leaves, pumpkin, zucchinis, apples, carrots and sweet potatoes, all of which they accept without any problems.

Cuttlebone shells for calcium intake must be offered permanently, as the animals need more calcium to build up their chitin shell.

Proteins should not be missing either. I use the Isopod food BALANCE FLAKES, which is very well received. Of course you can also use dog or cat food, but you should make sure it has a high protein content (wet food 17-20%, dry food 35-40%).

Nutrition is the most important basis for a long life and healthy and strong offspring. Spirostreptus spec. 1 can live up to 5 years.

Like all millipedes, they are crepuscular and nocturnal. However, this doesn’t mean that you won’t see them during the day. I often observe my animals feeding, climbing and moving around on the surface during the day.

Container:

Up to 10 millipedes can be kept in a container measuring 40 cm x 40 cm x 50 cm. The substrate height should be 20 cm so that the animals can burrow into it easily. This is particularly important during the moulting phase, as the animals moult in the substrate. Another advantage is that the higher the substrate, the more balanced the microclimate in the container. Only forest humus should be used. Climbing facilities in the form of branches are recommended. These can also be overgrown with lichens and mosses and are very popular with Spirostreptus spec. 1. These can therefore be gradually refreshed and the diet of your pets expanded.

If you use a plastic box, you should drill sufficient air holes in the container.

Breeding:

Spirostreptus spec. 1 reach sexual maturity after 2-3 years. The husbandry parameter of temperature also plays a major role here (the higher the temperature, the faster the metabolism).

Under good conditions, a clutch can contain over 150 young. You should therefore be clear beforehand whether you have the space or the buyers for this.

The larvae can be left in the box of the adults and raised without any problems.

Special features:

The appearance of these diplopods is absolutely fascinating. The animals are orange and green banded as you can see in this photo.

With its stately size and relatively slender appearance, Spirostreptus spec. 1 lays the foundation for an imposing appearance.

The millipede is only suitable for removal to a limited extent. They can sense any kind of stress and then like to secrete a lot, even for their size. You should therefore ensure that handling is as stress-free as possible.

Tip: The humidity should be at least 70%. There must be no waterlogging.

Spirostreptus spec. 1 can be socialized with Isopods. The Isopods eat the fecal pellets of the diplopods and thrive as a result.
