Discover the Ophistreptus guineensis: a giant from the dry savannahs of Africa
Ophistreptus guineensis “Chocolate Millipede” originates from the dynamic dry savannahs of Nigeria and Ghana, a habitat known for its distinct dry and rainy seasons. With an impressive length of up to 26 centimetres and its striking, milk chocolate-like colouring, the chocolate millipede attracts the attention of every terrarium enthusiast.
Despite its preference for humid conditions, Ophistreptus guineensis “Chocolate Millipede” is surprisingly adaptable to less watery periods. In its natural environment, it feeds mainly on rotting leaves and wood, although it is not averse to occasionally consuming fruit. This millipede is known for its peaceful and gentle behaviour and is considered completely harmless to humans. With proper and loving care, the chocolate millipede can reach a lifespan of up to seven years in captivity.
To keep Ophistreptus guineensis “Chocolate Millipedes” in a species-appropriate way, a suitably large terrarium is required that simulates the high humidity of their natural habitat. This should be 70-75% during the day and 90-100% at night.
We recommend a top layer of food leaves as a substrate in order to optimally regulate the humidity in the terrarium and at the same time create numerous natural hiding places. In addition, white rotten wood should be offered on the surface to encourage the natural behaviour of the chocolate millipede and provide it with further feeding options.
The design of the terrarium should also include various climbing options, as Ophistreptus guineensis “Chocolate Millipedes” like to explore their surroundings. However, care should always be taken to ensure that the furnishings are stable and can withstand the weight of the animals. Regularly checking the terrarium conditions, especially the humidity levels, is essential to ensure a healthy microclimate for the chocolate millipede.
Ophistreptus guineensis “Chocolate Millipede” is not only an enrichment for any terrarium due to its size and appearance, but also an interesting pet due to its uncomplicated care and long lifespan. This millipede offers a fascinating opportunity to bring a piece of African fauna into your own home and provides exciting observation opportunities for young and old.
