Short description Euphrynichus bacillifer:
Euphrynichus bacillifer originally comes from a relatively large distribution area between Central and South Africa. Large, somewhat different areas of origin also mean for the keeping in the terrarium that the animals can also adapt somewhat to the conditions. Of course, this does not mean a 90 degree turnaround in keeping requirements but they can definitely tolerate some variation.
Typical for whip spiders Euphrynichus bacillifer also has a relatively flat body. Therefore it fits into every crack and that’s exactly what it likes to do. It is fascinating to see the nocturnal whip spider species scanning its surroundings with its whips and moving sideways. You should also make sure that they have enough space in the terrarium so that they can move freely. You can increase the walking surface with layered cork bark or heaped lava stones. The latter at the same time store moisture well and slowly release it back into the environment. The animals should be kept at 28-30 °C and a constant high humidity (80-95%). Offering a shallow water bowl with stones is also useful, as we could often observe that the animals actually accept and drink from it.
As substrate we use a forest humus, white rotten wood and leaves mixture. This we have inoculated with springtails and as ground police and simultaneous food source we have Porcellionides pruinosus (Cuban isopods) in use. This soft-shelled isopod species is very well accepted by the Euphrynichus bacillifer and we have a kind of self-sufficient symbiosis in the terrarium.
Euphrynichus bacillifer is very social and we could never find a case of cannibalism, so you can keep the animals very well in groups. As soon as you keep both sexes, there will be offspring automatically. The young animals stay on the back of the females until the first moult. After that we separate the offspring from the group and settle them in a separate group.
