Archispirostreptus gigas – The African giant millipede for your terrarium

Archispirostreptus gigas, also known as the African giant millipede, is one of the most imposing species in the terrarium hobby and impresses with its impressive size, calm nature and fascinating behavior. With a length of up to 30 cm, it is one of the largest diplopods in the world – a real giant among invertebrates!

Its shiny, dark brown to black body consists of over 250 individual segments that move gently in waves with every movement. Its movement appears calm and almost majestic. Its simple but elegant colors and massive appearance make Archispirostreptus gigas “Giant millipede” a real eye-catcher in any terrarium.

Despite its size, this millipede is peaceful and easy to keep. A terrarium from 60 × 40 × 40 cm is sufficient for a pair or a small group. A deep, loose substrate of at least 15-20 cm consisting of forest humus, white rotten wood, kinshi and dead leaves is particularly important. This substrate not only serves as a food source, but also as a retreat for burrowing and moulting.

The ideal temperature is 24-27 °C during the day, at night it may cool down to around 20 °C. A constant humidity of 75-85 % is important to ensure healthy development. Regular spraying and creating a more humid area in the substrate will help.

Archispirostreptus gigas “giant millipede” feeds primarily on rotting plant material, leaves and wood. It is also happy to eat vegetables such as cucumber, sweet potato or pumpkin. Animal protein in small quantities, e.g. in the form of millipede food, helps young animals in particular to grow.

Its peaceful nature also allows it to socialize with springtails, Isopods or other bottom-dwelling invertebrates – ideal for bioactive terrariums. Reproduction is also possible in the terrarium, but the females lay their eggs deep in the substrate, so patience is required.

Archispirostreptus gigas “giant millipede” is not only a fascinating pet, but also an impressive example of the diversity and elegance of invertebrates. Anyone who has ever seen this gentle giant live will not soon forget it.
