Xenobolus carnifex “Red” – The shiny red millipede from South India

Xenobolus carnifex “Red” is one of the most impressive diplopods currently kept in terrariums. This species originates from the tropical regions of southern India, particularly Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where it lives in the warm, humus-rich deciduous forests. The animals move through thick layers of foliage and white rotten wood, where they not only find food but also protect themselves from predators. The “Red” variant is not an artificially created color morph, but a natural color form of this species, which is characterized by a rich, warm reddish brown and can even shimmer slightly copper-colored depending on the individual. It is precisely this natural play of colors that makes it a particularly attractive choice for lovers of exotic invertebrates.

With an average length of seven to ten centimetres, Xenobolus carnifex “Red” is one of the medium-sized representatives of the order Spirobolida. Despite their size, the animals are peaceful and curious and are ideally suited to a quiet, well-structured terrarium. They often spend the day in burrows they have dug themselves and come out at dusk to search for food. Due to their active behavior and regular exploration tours, they offer their owners a lot of observation potential without being hectic or sensitive.

This species is best kept in a warm and humid terrarium that is modeled on its Indian habitat. Temperatures between twenty-two and twenty-six degrees and high humidity are ideal. The substrate plays a particularly important role. It should be at least twelve to fifteen centimetres deep and contain a nutrient-rich mixture of forest humus, white rotten wood, leaves and a reliable source of calcium. Xenobolus carnifex not only lives in such a soil system, but also finds the majority of its food. Supplementary feed such as vegetables, millipede food or additional types of foliage ensure variety and stable growth.

As this species occurs in groups in the wild, it can easily be kept together with several animals in the terrarium. A densely planted, near-natural setup with moss, bark and dead wood provides ideal conditions and invites the animals to display their natural behaviors. Breeding is easy for many keepers, as the females lay their eggs deep in the substrate and the offspring can develop there in a protected environment.

Xenobolus carnifex “Red” is therefore not only an impressively colorful diplopod, but also a robust, active and easy-to-observe species that is a pleasure to keep for beginners and experienced keepers alike.
