Prepodesmus ornatus- why observing here is especially fun
Prepodesmus ornatus is a fascinating representative of the ribbon-footed fish that immediately catches the eye with its intense coloration. Its deep black, flat body is accentuated by strong red-orange tubercles on each segment – a high-contrast color pattern that could naturally warn of predators. The reddish shimmering legs and antennae provide additional accents and make it a real eye-catcher in the terrarium. The animal looks like a living work of art, striding through the foliage and exuding an almost primeval elegance.
In the wild, this pretty band-footed lizard comes from the tropical forests of Nigeria, where it moves through the damp, decaying leaves of the forest floor. It also prefers similar conditions in the terrarium: a well-moistened substrate of forage leaves, white rotten wood and leaf humus forms the ideal basis. Temperatures between 22 and 26 °C and a humidity of 75-85% are essential for it to feel comfortable. It needs stable hiding places such as roots, moss or pieces of bark, under which it likes to retreat during the day.
Despite its rather quiet lifestyle, Prepodesmus ornatus is an exciting animal to observe. It becomes particularly active in the evening hours or after spraying and goes on the move. As a primary decomposer, it plays an important role in the ecosystem of the terrarium by breaking down organic material such as leaves and thus contributing to the nutrient supply of the soil. It is absolutely peaceful and can be easily socialized with other bottom dwellers such as springtails or Isopods. Prepodesmus ornatus is an impressive inhabitant for humid terrariums that will delight both beginners and experienced keepers with its unique appearance.
