Phidippus regius “Isla de la Juventud” – colorful Cuban jumping spider with active behavior and ideal for structured terrariums.
Phidippus regius “ Isla de la Juventud” comes from the island of the same name south of the Cuban mainland. The natural habitat there is characterized by warm tropical temperatures, seasonal humidity and dense vegetation. It is precisely this interplay of warmth, structure and moderate humidity that you should recreate in the terrarium to ensure that the animal develops stably and remains active. At the same time, the species needs good ventilation, because although it uses humidity, it does not tolerate permanently wet conditions.
Visually, this form of origin shows impressive variability. Females often present warm brown, gray or orange tones with clear markings, while males appear significantly darker. Particularly striking are the metallic shimmering chelicerae of the males, which reflect intensely blue, green or violet depending on the incidence of light. The sexual dimorphism is clearly recognizable, as males appear slimmer and more leggy, while females are more robustly built. This creates an exciting visual contrast within the species.
In terms of behavior, this jumping spider impresses with its activity and attentiveness. It regularly explores its environment, reacts precisely to movements and displays impressive jumping distances. It acts in a controlled and purposeful manner, making every feeding a small spectacle. During the day, it likes to sit elevated on branches or plants and observe its surroundings, while at night it retreats into a small, self-made web. It usually creates this sleeping web in the upper areas of the terrarium.
A vertically oriented terrarium with sufficient height and structure is recommended for keeping them. Cork bark, branching twigs and real plants such as ivy create natural climbing areas and stabilize the microclimate at the same time. A moderate humidity level of around 60-75 % is ideal, although it is better to spray in spots rather than moisten the entire tank. This creates drinking opportunities without the substrate becoming too wet.
Depending on their size, they are fed with fruit flies, oven fish or small crickets. Young animals require more frequent feedings, while adult animals are adequately fed once or twice a week. You should remove uneaten food promptly to avoid stress. Females reach a body size of around 18-22 mm and usually live significantly longer than males.
Phidippus regius “Isla de la Juventud” combines tropical origin, intense colors and pronounced activity behavior. Anyone looking for a visible, curious and intelligent jumping spider will get an animal with a strong presence, clear character and high observation quality.
