Phidippus carneus – The red beauty from the southwest of the USA and Mexico
Phidippus carneus is a jumping spider that not only impresses with its lively nature, but above all with its striking appearance. This species originates from the dry to semi-arid regions of the south-west of the United States and parts of Mexico. There it inhabits open landscapes, scrubland and rocky areas, where its vibrant coloration is perfectly accentuated.
Characteristic for Phidippus carneus is their intense, often bright red to orange basic coloration, which varies in saturation depending on the individual. The females are particularly impressive with their richly colored abdomen, while the males are usually somewhat slimmer and often have high-contrast black markings. Like many species of the genus Phidippus they also have large, shiny main eyes, which not only enable excellent spatial vision, but also give the spider its typical “curious look”.
The behavior of Phidippus carneus is typical of jumping spiders – they are extremely active, curiously explore their surroundings and display amazing jumping ability, which they use skillfully when hunting. This species is considered to be alert and not very shy, so they can often be observed exploring in the terrarium.
In terms of posture she a well-ventilated terrarium with plenty of climbing opportunities and structures. As it comes from warmer regions, it appreciates temperatures of around 26-28 °C during the day and low to moderate humidity. Varied furnishings with twigs, leaves and pieces of bark come particularly close to their natural habitat.
With its intense coloration and charming behavior Phidippus carneus is a real eye-catcher and one of the most visually impressive species for lovers of jumping spiders.
