Mardonius spec. “Cameroon Red Leg” – the classic with strong colors

The Mardonius spec. “Cameroon Red Leg” has been a real favorite among terrarium enthusiasts for years – and for good reason. With its deep black, shiny body and striking reddish-brown legs, this impressive millipede is not only a visual highlight, but also a fascinating partner to observe. Its powerful appearance and calm nature also make it ideal for beginners to keeping African myriapods.

This giant millipede, which originates from Cameroon, reaches a length of up to 22 centimetres when fully grown and moves leisurely through its terrarium. It is particularly active in damp weather and at dusk. During the day, it likes to retreat into its hiding place, which is why a sufficiently thick layer of substrate – ideally 10 to 15 centimetres – is necessary. Forest humus, mixed with forage leaves and white rotten wood, provides the ideal basis for its digging activities.

The terrarium for Mardonius spec. “Cameroon Red Leg” should be at least 30 × 30 × 30 cm in size, or even larger if several animals are to be kept together. Good ventilation is just as important as an even basic humidity level. The substrate should be lightly sprayed two to three times a week – without creating waterlogging. The animals particularly like to be kept in areas with constantly high humidity.

The diet of this species is uncomplicated: Fresh vegetables such as carrots, cucumber, zucchini and blanched spinach or sweet potato are on the menu. Millipede food or gammarus are also readily accepted as a source of protein. Leftover food should be removed regularly to prevent mites from forming – springtails are excellent at recycling leftovers.

Mardonius spec. “Cameroon Red Leg” is not only robust and long-lived, but also an exciting species for anyone who wants to explore the world of myriapods. Its calm nature, striking coloration and impressive size make it a real eye-catcher in the terrarium.
