The
Hymenopus coronatus
better known as orchid mantisis undoubtedly one of the most spectacular and beautiful mantis of all. Its unusual coloration and shape make it look like part of an exotic flower – a perfect example of natural camouflage in its most sophisticated form. This species not only captivates terrarium fans with its appearance, but also delights with its calm nature and fascinating hunting technique.

Originally comes from
Hymenopus coronatus
originates from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. There it inhabits the lower to middle vegetation area of moist, warmer forests. Its camouflage helps it to hide among flower petals and lie in wait for prey – especially small insects that are attracted by the “flower”.

The body shape is special: broad, laterally flattened “flower lobes” on the legs and thorax as well as intense shades of white, pink or soft yellow give it the typical orchid appearance. The colors can vary depending on temperature and posture. Males remain significantly smaller and lighter than females and only reach around 2.5 cm, while females grow up to 8 cm.

The posture of
Hymenopus coronatus
is relatively demanding. A humidity level of around 70-80 % is ideal, combined with temperatures between 25 and 30 °C. Good ventilation is essential to prevent mold growth. Sphagnum moss or fine coco humus is suitable as a substrate, preferably supplemented with living plants to stabilize the microclimate. The animals also need sufficient structure – for example, diagonally placed branches or leaves on which they can shed their skin.

They are not particularly choosy when it comes to feeding, but should be regularly provided with small food insects such as fruit flies (Drosophila), micro-homes or young cockroaches. The orchid mantis is a skillful ambush hunter – it attacks at lightning speed when prey approaches.
