Heterometrus – Large, calm and exciting
Heterometrus spinifer is one of the best known and most impressive scorpions in the terrarium hobby. The animals originate from the humid tropical rainforests of Malaysiaand this is precisely why they need a stable, warm climate.
With a size of up to 17 cm this species is one of the larger representatives of its genus. At the same time, the blue-black coloration for a strong visual impression. This makes it easy to distinguish this species from other Heterometrus species.
The animals are predominantly calm in behavior. They withdraw during the day, but become active at night. Then they go hunting for prey or start digging. This means you can regularly make exciting observations.
Climate and posture
For keeping, you should maintain a humidity of around 70-80 % to be maintained. At the same time, the temperature drops at night to 22-24 °Cwhich automatically increases the humidity slightly.
A substrate that is suitable for digging is particularly important. You should have at least 10 cm substrate so that the animals can create stable burrows. Our tarantula substrate is ideal as it retains moisture and also keeps its shape.
In addition, a layer of leavesto retain the moisture. At the same time, it protects the substrate from drying out and ensures a natural appearance.
A terrarium with the dimensions 30 × 30 × 30 cm is sufficient for keeping them. However, larger tanks offer more structure and significantly reduce stress.
Important points on posture
-
Keep humidity constant at 70-80 %
-
Warm during the day, slightly cooler at night
-
At least 10 cm of buriable substrate use
-
Offer hiding places and structure
-
Always provide a water bowl
The animals mainly use the water bowl at night. This ensures a constant supply of water.
Breeding and behavior
If you keep several animals together, it often comes to offspring. The young initially remain on their mother’s back. There they are well protected and continue to develop safely.
You should only move them when they come off their backs. You can then continue to rear them either individually or in small groups.
Note on determination
Our Heterometrus spinifer come from a carefully tested line and have been clearly identified by an experienced specialist.
Within this genus in particular, there is often confusion, as many species are very similar in appearance. We therefore pay particular attention to Correct classification.
So you can be sure that you really have Heterometrus spinifer – clearly identified and not just “similar looking”.
Due to their size, their calm nature and their exciting behavior this species is ideal for anyone looking for an impressive but durable scorpion
