Anthia biguttata – The desert warrior for your terrarium
Even at first glance, it is noticeable that this ground beetle has more than just two bright spots. The creamy white spots on the back are connected by a fine line and are reminiscent of a small, mischievous smiley face. This playful look makes Anthia biguttata a real eye-catcher and adds a special touch to any terrarium.
This impressive beetle originates from the dry savannahs of West and Central Africa. There it lives on sandy soils with sparse vegetation. In the terrarium, it therefore feels particularly at home in a dry setup with a loose mixture of sand and clay. Flat stones, cork tubes and roots, which serve both as hiding places and climbing elements, are suitable furnishings. An area of at least 30 x 30 centimetres offers the beetle enough space to move around.
Anthia biguttata likes warm temperatures. During the day it feels comfortable at 26 to 30 degrees Celsius, at night it can be a little cooler. A small damp spot in the substrate provides the necessary microclimate, while the majority of the tank should remain dry.
The beetle is mainly active at dusk and is then a skillful hunter. It likes to eat live insects such as crickets, cockroaches and mealworms. If it is threatened, it can spray a conspicuous, odorous secretion – a fascinating behavior that is more for self-defense and is harmless to humans.
Anthia biguttata is not only beautiful, but also easy to care for. With regular food, a clean substrate and stable housing conditions, the beetle can be kept for many years without any problems. Its striking pattern, self-confident appearance and exciting lifestyle make it a special experience for anyone looking for more than just a pet.
