Short description:
The body structure of Porcellio violaceus “Rubivan” is somewhat similar to that of Porcellio ornatus. It is relatively round and appears smooth. The overall size of 2.3 cm is also similar. This species, which originates from southern Spain, has an unusual colouration and immediately catches the eye with its creamy white ground colouration. The head and abdomen are brown in colour and are joined by a two-rowed dotted line. The legs and antennae are white.
There are a few things to consider when keeping them. The animals come from a very calcareous region. Therefore, the substrate should be limed and possibly a few limestones should be offered in the isopod terrarium. Sepia should of course always be offered as a calcium source.
Ventilation areas should be generously provided. The species does not tolerate musty stale humid air. Generally the humidity can be kept relatively low at 60-70 %. It likes a slightly more humid mossy corner in the isopod terrarium to carry out the recurring moulting process.
Porcellio violaceus “Rubivan” have no great demands on temperature and even tolerates frost in places in winter. It also tolerates the rising temperatures of up to 40 °C in summer without any problems. Therefore, temperature fluctuations do not play a serious role with this species.
