Heterometrus silenus – Calm large scorpion with an impressive appearance
Heterometrus silenus is a large, black scorpion from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia that impresses with its imposing appearance and peaceful behavior. This species is known for its powerful pincers and robust build, but hardly ever uses its venomous sting. The sting is considered harmless and is comparable in its effect to a bee sting – which is why keeping this scorpion is permitted in all federal states in Germany. Its defensive nature is particularly noteworthy: when threatened or feeding, it usually only uses its claws. This is exactly what makes Heterometrus silenus an excellent choice for newcomers to scorpion keeping.
A terrarium with a minimum size of 30 × 30 × 30 cm offers enough space for an adult animal. The temperature can be regulated using a heating mat or lighting, while a humidity of between 70 and 80 % ensures an authentic tropical climate. A mixture of diggable forest humus and a little loamy sand (ratio approx. 3:1) is suitable as a substrate.
Its fluorescent effect under black light is a visual highlight. The exoskeleton contains special molecules that produce a fascinating glow under UV light – an effect that protects scorpions from predators in the wild and amazes owners.
Heterometrus silenus can also be kept in groups, as long as sufficient space and food are provided. For a small group (e.g. five adult animals), a terrarium measuring 60 × 45 × 45 cm is recommended. It is important to observe the animals carefully at the beginning, as not all individuals are suitable for group living. However, with patience, a good structure in the terrarium and regular feeding, socialization with this species often works without any problems.
Heterometrus silenus is therefore an all-round interesting scorpion species – large but gentle, spectacular in appearance but easy to keep. It is the perfect choice for anyone taking their first steps in keeping scorpions or looking for a quiet species with exciting nocturnal activity.
