Phidippus otiosus “Kuba” – spirited jumping spider with Caribbean flair

The Phidippus otiosus “Cuba” is a particularly striking variant of the North American jumping spider and immediately catches the eye with its charming appearance, large eyes and fluffy appearance. This color form originally comes from the Caribbean island of Cuba, which not only gives it its name, but also its unique appearance. The beige to gray-brown base tone is typical, combined with delicate dark accents that shimmer depending on the lighting conditions. The animals are compact, strongly built and move with the curiosity and liveliness typical of Phidippus species.

Like all representatives of its genus, Phidippus otiosus “Kuba” is very alert and active. It observes its surroundings with its large front eyes and often reacts to movements with surprising interaction. This characteristic makes it one of the most popular species among jumping spider fans. The animals are active during the day and curiously explore their terrarium. A well-structured home with places to retreat to, climbing opportunities and quiet corners will ensure your spider’s well-being. Terrariums measuring 20 × 20 × 30 cm or more are particularly suitable. A good exchange of air is important – the climate should not be too dry or too humid.

Phidippus otiosus “Kuba” is quite uncomplicated in terms of care. Feeding once a week (e.g. with Drosophila, small crickets or flies), occasional spraying to maintain the humidity and a quiet location are enough to give it a good life. Take a look at our magazine for more information. When building nests, the animals prefer higher structures or cover areas, so we recommend – especially for breeding – an appropriate setup with retreat areas in the upper area. Our eucalyptus bells are perfect for this. The adult coloration appears after several moults, usually from FH6-FH8.

With its curious nature, interesting behavior and distinctive origin, the Phidippus otiosus “Kuba” is a great addition to any collection and makes for many exciting moments of observation.
