Spirobolus caudulanus – Elegant roller professional from Southeast Asia

The Spirobolus caudulanus is a medium-sized, elegant millipede from Southeast Asia that impresses with its calm nature and attractive appearance. With a body length of about 11 to 13 cm it is one of the ideal inhabitants for anyone looking for a quiet but impressive species for a near-natural terrarium.

Its matt, greyish to light blue body with subtle color accents and the typical, slightly squat appearance make it a real eye-catcher – especially when it moves slowly through the foliage or curls up into a tight spiral when disturbed, as is typical for spirobolids.

Keeping Spirobolus caudulanus is uncomplicated and therefore also suitable for beginners in the world of diplopods. A terrarium with the dimensions 30 × 30 × 30 cm or larger offers sufficient space, especially when kept in groups. This species loves a Warm and humid climate with temperatures between 22 and 26 °C and a humidity of about 75-85 %. Good ventilation is important to prevent mold growth.

The substrate should be at least 10 cm deep and loose – ideally a mixture of leaf humus, white rotten wood and fodder leavesas is common with many tropical millipedes. A blanket of leaves on the surface provides additional cover and constant moisture. Hiding places made of bark or moss are also readily accepted.

In terms of nutrition Spirobolus caudulanus a typical decomposer: it mainly eats rotting plant material, supplemented by occasional fresh food such as cucumber, carrot, zucchini or dried herbs. A small microfauna with springtails or white Isopods helps to maintain hygiene in the substrate and ensures a stable climate.

If you are looking for a quiet, yet interesting species with easy care requirements, you will be delighted with Spirobolus caudulanus a charming inhabitant for any tropical terrarium.
