Desmoxytes planata – The pink dragonfoot for your terrarium

If you are looking for an unusual inhabitant for your invertebrate terrarium, then you will love Desmoxytes planataalso affectionately known as “pink dragonfoot” called, cannot be missed. This colorful millipede species from Southeast Asia is a real highlight for any lover of exotic invertebrates and is guaranteed to attract attention with its striking appearance.

The body of Desmoxytes planata “pink dragonfoot” is bright pink to strong pink – a coloration that is absolutely unique in the world of diplopods. Its name-giving, dragon-like appendages along the body segments are reminiscent of the dorsal plates of a mythical creature and give it not only its spectacular appearance, but also its nickname. With a length of about 3 up to 4 cm the animals remain comparatively small, but are all the more active and can often be observed on their nocturnal forays.

The pink dragonfoot is robust when kept as long as certain parameters are observed. It prefers a rather tropical, humid terrarium with good ventilation. Temperatures between 22 and 26 °C and a humidity around 75-85 % create the right environment. A suitable substrate is a mixture of leaf humus, white rotten wood and leaveswhich is always kept slightly moist.

Like most millipedes, Desmoxytes planata “pink dragonfoot” feeds on organic material. Their diet is supplemented by vegetables, fish food or dried herbs. Due to their activity and colorfulness, they are ideal display animals for smaller, warm and humid setups – even when kept in groups, provided there is enough space and hiding places.

The animals are mostly active at dusk and at night. Particularly exciting: when threatened, they can secrete a milky white substance, which serves as a deterrent to predators in the wild. They are absolutely harmless to humans – but they should only be touched with caution and clean hands.

With their whimsical appearance, peaceful behavior and relatively easy keeping, Desmoxytes planata “pink dragonfoot” are ideal terrarium animals for anyone looking for something out of the ordinary. They combine biology with aesthetics and bring life to any invertebrate terrarium.
