Porcellio werneri – The fascinatingly flat Isopod

Porcellio werneri is one of the most unusual isopod species in the terrarium hobby. Anyone who has seen these animals once will never forget them again. Their almost round and extremely flat physique clearly sets them apart from many other Isopods. It is precisely this special body shape that makes this species so fascinating.

The animals have a gray basic colorationwhich is surrounded by a white border along the segmental plates is framed. This pattern makes for a striking appearance and makes the species easily recognizable.

The unusual physique also fulfills a practical purpose. Porcellio werneri uses its flat shape to cling closely to surfaces. The animals often adhere to Roots, stones or other structures in the terrarium. This often makes them look almost like part of the furnishings.

However, once the animals are picked up, they exhibit interesting behavior. They play dead immediatelyas soon as they are disturbed. This strategy serves as a protective mechanism against potential predators.

The keeping of Porcellio werneri requires some experience. Like many representatives of the genus Porcellio they prefer a rather dry substrate. At the same time, however, they need a damp moss cornerwhich they seek out especially during moulting.

This is precisely the challenge with this species. The substrate must not be too moist, as the animals react sensitively to permanently wet conditions. At the same time, a certain basic moisture level must be present so that moulting can proceed smoothly.

The right balance between sufficient moisture and dry areas therefore requires a little sensitivity. However, a stable climate can be created with a well-structured terrarium landscape.

A suitable substrate is a mixture of leaf humus, white rotten wood components and a thick layer of leaves. These materials serve both as a habitat and as food. In addition pieces of bark, cork or stones are offered as structure and hiding places.

With its unique physique, exciting behavior and extraordinary appearance, the Porcellio werneri is a special species of isopod that is particularly popular with experienced terrarium keepers.
