When southern Europe moves in – the charming “Sevilla” style
Porcellio spec. “Sevilla” comes from the warm region around Seville in southern Spain, and it is precisely this area of origin that shapes their character. The animals are lively, hardy and extremely curious, which is why they are often seen in the terrarium. Their Mediterranean origin ensures that they tolerate a dry climate well and at the same time actively use smaller wet areas. This means that their natural habitat can be recreated very well.
Visual effect Porcellio spec. “Sevilla” particularly elegant. The animals have a dark base color that shows different nuances depending on the incidence of light – sometimes warm grey, sometimes slightly bluish. Together with the fine light accents, this creates a natural, almost stony look that goes perfectly with roots, foliage and rocks. In many set-ups, this type blends in harmoniously and looks like a living part of the landscape.
This species is pleasantly uncomplicated to keep. It does need a permanently slightly moist retreat area, but the rest of the habitat should remain dry. This structure allows the animals to choose for themselves what they prefer and regulate their water balance very well. Good ventilation is important because Porcellio spec. “Sevilla” reacts sensitively to waterlogging. A mixture of lots of leaves, white rotten wood, pieces of cork and some moss will create stable and near-natural conditions.
The species is also very flexible when it comes to food. It eats dried leaves, white rotten wood and isopod food, but is also happy to accept additional protein sources. A varied diet promotes both the growth of the animals and the development of the colony. Young animals in particular benefit from this, as they grow quickly and show amazing activity from an early age.
As the animals are extremely curious, they regularly explore their terrarium. As a result, they are observed much more frequently than many other Porcellio species. This visibility makes “Sevilla” very attractive for beginners and keepers looking for a lively, easy-to-care-for isopod project. In addition, a stable colony quickly develops in a well-structured environment, which can be observed beautifully in their everyday life.
Porcellio spec. “Sevilla” combines Mediterranean flair with robustness, activity and charm. If you are looking for a species of isopod that is easy to keep, yet still stands out and is very present in the terrarium, you will have a lot of fun with this special species.
