Porcellio scaber Dalmation posture – robust, visible, popular

Porcellio scaber “Dalmation” is one of the most popular color morphs of this robust and extremely adaptable isopod species. The animals have a light base color that is covered with dark spots – a pattern that immediately brings to mind the typical fur pattern of a Dalmatian. As each animal has its own distribution of spots, no two individuals are the same. It is precisely this diversity that makes the species so fascinating for many owners. Even small groups create a lively, varied picture that gives the terrarium a very special visual dynamic.

The animals originally come from the classic Porcellio scaber one of the most widespread isopod species in the world. This species is considered extremely robust and is therefore ideal for beginners. Porcellio scaber “Dalmation” takes on all these positive characteristics, but also offers a much more attractive appearance. They are extremely active, often show themselves during the day and curiously explore every structure in the habitat. This makes them ideal for bioactive setups, planted terrariums or for keepers who like to observe their Isopods.

The species shows a wide range of tolerance in keeping. It prefers a rather dry main area, but uses a clearly defined moist zone for moulting and water intake. The terrarium should be well ventilated and offer sufficient structure. Pieces of cork, bark slabs and layers of leaves are readily accepted. White rotten wood and a loose soil layer of forest soil or humus promote a stable microclimate, which has a positive effect on reproduction. The animals reproduce reliably, but not too quickly, which means that even smaller colonies remain easy to control. Their diet is varied. In addition to foliage and wood, they also eat protein-rich supplements such as fish food, which supports development and pigmentation. A cuttlefish shell provides the necessary calcium content in the shell.

Particularly attractive: their light-colored markings make them easy to see even in darker terrarium areas. Their friendly appearance and uncomplicated husbandry make Porcellio scaber “Dalmation” a perfect choice for beginners as well as for collectors who want colorful lines in their colony.
