Bright, alert, active – fall in love with Porcellio ornatus “Yellow”
Porcellio ornatus “Yellow” is one of the most intensely colored isopod species that can be found in the hobby. The animals show a dark basic pattern, which is complemented by strong yellow stripes or dots. These clear colour accents make the species immediately recognizable in the terrarium and make it look almost exotic. Many keepers love precisely this contrast because the animals remain highly visible even in densely furnished enclosures. They are also curious and often active, which means they can often be observed during the day.
The species originates from warmer regions and therefore prefers a slightly tropical microclimate. It always needs a humid zone so that it can withdraw and moult easily. In addition, there should always be a drier area, as the animals like to move around there. This combination creates a stable climate in which Porcellio ornatus “Yellow” feels very comfortable. The behavior appears more balanced and the colony shows itself more often, which makes observation even more exciting.
Leaves and white rotten wood are suitable food, although the animals need additional protein sources due to their higher protein requirements. Fish food, isopod protein or small amounts of vegetables are readily accepted. As Porcellio ornatus “Yellow” exhibit fast feeding behavior, they keep the terrarium clean and decompose organic material reliably. They are therefore ideal for bioactive terrariums with reptiles, spiders or amphibians, as long as there are enough hiding places.
The colonies develop slowly but remain stable if humidity and food supply are consistently maintained. The animals are well suited to keepers who prefer colorful, active and larger Isopods. Their striking yellow coloration makes them almost like little highlights in the terrarium that immediately catch the eye. Many keepers appreciate this species because it is also visible in daylight and exhibits lively behavior.
Porcellio ornatus “Yellow” is therefore a species of isopod for anyone looking for something special. The animals bring color, movement and a natural balance to any setup. If you want to visually enhance your terrarium and at the same time keep a robust, exciting species, this color form is just the thing.
