Pure radiance – when Porcellio ornatus gilds your terrarium
Porcellio ornatus “High Yellow” is one of the most intensely colored isopod varieties of all. The animals have a bright yellow color that moves through the foliage like small dots of sunlight. This color form is significantly stronger than the well-known “yellow” variants and looks almost tropical in the terrarium. Many keepers love them for this very reason, as “High Yellow” brings life and warmth to any setup.
This species originally comes from warmer, rather dry habitats. It therefore also feels at home in the terrarium if dry and more humid areas are combined. A stable structure with lots of forest humus, leaves, moss and cork creates an ideal microclimate. The animals use these areas actively, as they switch between warm, dry areas and moist retreats as required. This allows them to regulate their water balance well and they are very active.
Porcellio ornatus “High Yellow” is a very mobile species. It can be seen much more often than many other Isopods, as it is on the move during the day and at night. This makes it ideal for anyone who likes to observe. Their movements are fast and elegant, while the bright yellow coloring between the substrate immediately catches the eye. The animals also exhibit interesting social behavior and usually travel in small groups.
They are uncomplicated when it comes to food. They eat dead leaves, white rotten wood and various sources of protein. They are also happy to eat vegetables and isopod food. A varied diet supports the intense yellow coloration. The colony grows quickly, as Ornatus species reproduce reliably if the climate is right. This makes “High Yellow” suitable for both experienced keepers and beginners who are looking for a stable and colorful isopod species.
The animals love warm temperatures, but extreme heat should be avoided. Good ventilation is important because Ornatus species are somewhat more sensitive to waterlogging. Ideal conditions can be created with a clear damp zone, a dry zone and regular spraying. The animals will reward you with high activity, vibrant colors and rapid colony development.
Porcellio ornatus “High Yellow” is therefore a real enrichment for any terrarium. It combines intense colors with lively behavior and easy keeping. Anyone looking for a species that immediately attracts attention and at the same time remains robust will have a lot of fun with this special color form.
