Porcellio hoffmannseggi is one of the largest isopod species of all. Adults reach up to 2.5 cm in length and look impressive with their broad body and distinctive segments. This species originates from the warm, dry regions of south-western Europe and North Africa. There it lives in crevices, under stones and in loose substrate. These natural conditions are also reflected in the way it is kept.

In terrariums, the species is curious, active and often clearly visible. It likes to move between pieces of bark and wooden hiding places and uses any structure that is offered to it. Porcellio hoffmannseggii prefers a predominantly dry setup, but requires a small, clearly defined moist zone. This zone is important for moulting and water absorption. The rest of the substrate may remain dry and should be loose, burrowable and well aerated. A mixture of forest soil, a little sand and plenty of structure ensures a stable microclimate.

Due to their size, these Isopods have a higher protein requirement than many other species. They are therefore happy to accept additional food such as fish food tablets, dried insects and cuttlebone. At the same time, they need plenty of leaves and white rotten wood to keep them healthy. The animals often show themselves during the day, which makes them particularly interesting for keepers who like to watch their Isopods.

Although this species is not considered a classic beginner’s isopod, it can be kept well with a little experience. It reacts sensitively to permanently high humidity, but develops quickly if the temperature and ventilation are right. The optimum temperature is 22-26 °C, as the group remains active and stable under these conditions. As soon as the climate is right, the species reproduces reliably and builds up a strong colony.
