Porcellio expansus – the spectacular Isopod with huge side plates

Porcellio expansus is without doubt one of the most striking isopod species in the hobby. Its extremely wide pleura – the lateral armor plates – give it an almost primeval, “dragon-like” appearance. Even juveniles show the characteristic shape, but only adult animals develop the imposing silhouette for which this species is so famous. With a body length of up to 3.5 cm and a broad, flat stature, the Porcellio expansus like a miniature suit of armor on six legs.

The species originally comes from dry, warm habitats on the Iberian Peninsula. There it lives under stones, between loose substrate and in small crevices where it withdraws during the day. This is exactly the same behavior it exhibits in the terrarium. Although it is visible and curious, it spends part of the day in its self-chosen hiding places. In the evening it becomes much more active and explores its surroundings, eats and interacts within the group.

In husbandry Porcellio expansus a species for keepers with some experience, as it requires a well-structured and dry habitat. The majority of the substrate should remain really dry, as these animals are sensitive to prolonged moisture. Nevertheless, they need a small, clearly demarcated moist zone that they use for moulting and water intake. This damp area is perfectly adequate as long as there is good ventilation and the rest of the terrarium is kept dry. Leaves, white rotten wood and cuttlebone are the basis of their diet, but due to their size they also benefit from protein-rich supplements such as cricket meal or fish food. A varied diet ensures good moulting and stable breeding.

The animals are easy to keep as a group and show interesting social behavior. They often sit in loose groups under pieces of cork, share feeding areas and explore the structure of the terrarium together. While some Isopods are more nocturnal, others are more active at night. expansus often also during the day, especially when they have settled in and the climate is right. The high visibility is a big plus for owners who like to keep an eye on their animals.

If you are looking for an unusual, visually spectacular Isopod, you will find it in Porcellio expansus a real specialty. Not only is it large and impressive, but it also has fascinating behavior and an unmistakable look. This species is a highlight for any terrarium – and a favorite for anyone who values unusual morphology and exciting observation opportunities.
