Phyllium letiranti “Tataba” – Tropical leaf mimicry in a class of its own

Phyllium letiranti “Tataba” is one of the most impressive and colorful leaf insects within the Phylliidae. This species originates from Indonesia and fascinates with its incredible leaf mimicry, which never ceases to amaze even experienced keepers. Its body is greatly widened and its shape and structure are deceptively reminiscent of a freshly grown leaf. The “Tataba” variety in particular often has a more intense, clearly defined green coloration with fine veins running through it. This makes it look like a living piece of rainforest that moves gently.

Its calm nature makes it an ideal choice for fans of walking leaves. At the same time, it is very easy to film and photograph as it moves slowly and in a controlled manner. Juveniles, on the other hand, exhibit somewhat more active behavior and are often brown to reddish-brown in color, which makes them appear like young, wilting leaves in the wild. These color phases make the species particularly exciting because it changes greatly in appearance as it develops.

A terrarium with a minimum size of 30 × 30 × 45 cm is suitable for keeping them, as Phyllium letiranti “Tataba” requires sufficient space to climb and, above all, to moult. Humidity should be around 70-85 % and can be easily maintained by regular spraying. Nevertheless, good ventilation is crucial to prevent waterlogging. Temperatures between 24 and 28 °C are ideal and correspond to their natural habitat.

It is best to use blackberry, raspberry, oak or guava as food. The animals reliably accept these plants as long as the leaves are fresh and unsprayed. A daily change of food plants is ideal so that they are of consistently good quality. This is particularly important during moulting, as a balanced diet supports stable moulting and healthy growth.

Phyllium letiranti “Tataba” is easy to breed, provided you ensure high humidity and sufficient space. The females lay their eggs regularly, while the males – as with many Phyllium species – remain significantly smaller and slimmer. Due to their peaceful behavior, several animals can easily be kept together.

If you are looking for an elegant, colorful and absolutely extraordinary leaf insect species, you will find it in Phyllium letiranti “Tataba” a perfect choice. This species brings a piece of tropical nature directly into the home and inspires with its tranquillity, beauty and naturalness.
