Discover the fire jumping spider: Phidippus ardens in the spotlight!
We are delighted to present our latest jumping spider species – the Phidippus ardens, a fascinating jumping spider that not only impresses with its unique coloration, but also with its impressive behavior. What makes this species particularly special is that it is the first jumping spider species in our range in which the males are in no way inferior in appearance to the female specimens.
A special characteristic of Phidippus ardens is that the sexes of this species cannot be distinguished by the chelicerae, as they are blue-turquoise in both sexes. Instead, an optical feature is used to determine the sex, especially when the jumping spiders are subadult to adult: The coloration on the abdomen. Males show a bright red abdomen in this phase, while females have a red abdomen with a conspicuous black line. These differences are helpful in identifying and distinguishing the sexes within this fascinating species.
Phidippus ardens, also known as the fire jumping spider, is native to the sunny regions of the USA and Mexico. Their striking coloration makes them a real eye-catcher. The males proudly display a bright red abdomen, while the females stand out with a red abdomen accentuated by a striking black stripe. These colorful features make Phidippus ardens an extremely attractive choice for spider lovers and hobbyists.
Keeping Phidippus ardens is not only easy, but also extremely interesting. An appropriately sized terrarium (20 x 20 x 30 cm) or container provides sufficient space for them. A substrate of forest humus creates an ideal habitat for them and also provides food for the soil police at the same time. Adequate ventilation is also important to ensure optimum air circulation and create a healthy climate.
A key aspect of Phidippus ardens care is hydration. It is advisable to lightly spray water on the sides of the terrarium every 2-3 days so that it can absorb water. It likes it rather dry, so don’t overdo the spraying!
Feeding is uncomplicated. As a predatory hunter, you can feed Phidippus ardens with small insects such as flies, crickets and crickets. A regular supply of live insects every three days will ensure that you provide them with sufficient food. Make sure that the prey is appropriately sized so that it can safely catch and eat the food insect.
With its impressive jumping ability and active behavior, Phidippus ardens always offers a fascinating spectacle. Watch them chase and catch their prey or move skillfully through their terrarium. Their vibrant colors and interesting behavior make them an enrichment for every spider lover.
Overall, Phidippus ardens is a fascinating and relatively uncomplicated jumping spider choice that is suitable for both beginners and experienced spider keepers. With the right care and attention, it is sure to become a fascinating and entertaining part of your home.
