Paraphidippus basalis – Conspicuous, active, absolutely exciting
Are you looking for an unusual jumping spider? Then Paraphidippus basalis exactly your animal! This species originates from the drier regions of northern Mexico – and brings not only color but also activity to the terrarium.
The most striking feature is the orange-reddish abdominal band with the typical black pattern – many see it as a smiley face. This pattern is not only pretty, but also a clever warning coloration in nature. In direct comparison P. basalis is more robustly built than many other jumping spider species, which makes its appearance even more charming.
Its behavior is lively, curious and often highly visible. Like many representatives of the genus Paraphidippus she likes to be out and about, actively explores her surroundings and displays interesting hunting behavior. Thanks to her large eyes, she is an attentive observer – and a real joy to watch for you as her owner.
A well-structured terrarium with some height is suitable for keeping them, as they like to use raised spots. A format of 20x20x30 cm or larger is ideal. In terms of temperature, it copes well with 27-30 °C at night it can cool down. Important is a good ventilation and only light humidification – the species originates from rather dry areas and does not tolerate waterlogging.
We recommend natural materials such as thin branches, dry plants or moss as furnishings. Plants such as tillandsias or small succulents make the setup more lively and provide additional structure. They are fed with flies, small crickets, oven fish or Drosophila. Paraphidippus basalis eats very greedily and is usually at it immediately.
Paraphidippus basalis is the perfect choice for anyone looking for an active, colorful and unusual jumping spider. Its markings, behavior and robust character make it a real favorite in the hobby – also ideal for beginners in jumping spider keeping.
