Oryctes monoceros – African rhinoceros beetle with distinctive forehead horn
Oryctes monoceros is an impressive rhinoceros beetle from the leaf horn beetle family (Scarabaeidae). The animals originally come from tropical regions of Africa and are characterized by their strong, compact physique and the conspicuous horn of the males, which they use as a defensive or imposing feature. Their dark brown to almost black coloration with a slightly shiny chitinous shell gives them a noble, almost armored appearance that makes them real favorites among many beetle lovers. The females are somewhat stockier and have only a small horn, but are no different from the males in terms of care.
A terrarium with a minimum size of 30 × 30 × 30 cm is recommended for keeping a pair. Good ventilation is essential, but the climate should not be too dry. The animals prefer temperatures between 24 and 28 °C and a humidity of around 70 to 80 %. A substrate of flake soil at least 20 cm deep is suitable. A high substrate layer is particularly important for egg laying and larval development. The adult beetles require little care – they are happy to eat overripe fruit such as bananas, mangoes or peaches, and also like to eat Beetle Jelly.
Oryctes monoceros can be bred without any problems under good conditions. After mating, the female lays several eggs in the substrate, from which larvae develop within a few weeks. These go through three larval stages and take several months to pupate, depending on the temperature and food supply. The pupal period lasts around 4 to 6 weeks, after which the finished imagines hatch, which can live for several months if kept well. It is important to check the substrate regularly so as not to disturb or damage the larvae unnecessarily. The substrate should also not be infested with mites or mold, which is why a clean, balanced habitat is essential.
Oryctes monoceros is not only a real visual highlight, but also impresses with its interesting behavior and comparatively easy keeping. Ideal for beginners with an interest in tropical beetles, but also a nice addition for experienced collectors.
