Instructions for preparing a Drosophila preparation

With this simple method, you can create a successful Drosophila batch directly in the breeding container.

Ingredients:

• 90 ml water
• 10 ml vinegar (any type)
• 23 g Drosophila instant mix
• Optional: some dry kitchen paper or wood wool as a climbing aid

1. Prepare the breeding container:
   Use a suitable container with ventilation (e.g. fine air holes or a net in the lid).

2. Add instant mix:
   Sprinkle 23 g of Drosophila instant mix directly into the breeding container.

3. Add liquid & mix:
   Pour 90 ml water and 10 ml vinegar into the container and stir everything well until it forms a paste-like mixture. If the consistency is too firm or too runny, you can adjust it with a little water or instant mix.

4. Insert a climbing aid:
   Place a few pieces of dry kitchen paper or wood wool in the container. These help the flies to move around and lay their eggs.

5. Insert flies:
   Add some adult Drosophila flies to the freshly prepared container so that they can lay eggs.

6. Put the lid on & store warm:

   • Close the container with a lid that has ventilation.
   • Place the batch in a warm place (20-25 °C).
   • After approx. 10-14 days, new flies are ready for feeding.

Tips for successful breeding:

✅ Mix the mash directly in the container – saves time and prevents unnecessary mess.
✅ Don’t forget vinegar – keeps the mixture fresh for longer and reduces mold.
