Cubaris spec. “Caramel” – Sweet elegance in the terrarium

Cubaris spec. “Caramel” impresses with a warm, soft color palette reminiscent of softly melted caramel. The uniformly light brown to golden beige carapace plates give this isopod species an elegant, almost velvety appearance that immediately catches the eye in the terrarium. Its calm appearance and harmonious coloration make it an excellent choice for anyone who appreciates subtle, natural shades.

When kept, this species prefers temperatures between 22 and 26 °C and a relative humidity of around 70-80 %. As with many Cubaris species, the terrarium should be divided into a more humid area and a somewhat drier section in order to provide the animals with optimum conditions for moulting and retreating. Moss areas, cork tubes and layers of foliage serve as hiding places and retreats, while white rotten wood and foliage are not only a habitat but also a source of food.

The substrate should be loose, rich in humus and enriched with lime. In addition to the natural food from the substrate, “Caramel” Isopods like to eat various vegetables, foliage, protein food and a cuttlebone as a source of calcium. Feeding should be varied to promote health and coloration.

The species is considered peaceful and can be observed regularly in good conditions. The juveniles are initially lighter in color and only develop the rich, caramel-colored hue that gives this species its name as they mature.

In mixed bioactive setups Cubaris spec. “Caramel” They do valuable work as soil police by decomposing food scraps and dead plant material. At the same time, they add a soft, warm note of color to the overall look of the terrarium without being obtrusive.

With their discreet beauty, easy integration into natural settings and useful function, the Cubaris spec. “Caramel” an enrichment for every terrarium – both for lovers of rare color forms and for keepers looking for an easy-care, aesthetic isopod species.
