Caribena versicolor – the colorful ornamental tarantula from Martinique

Caribena versicolor is without doubt one of the most colorful tarantulas in the world. The species has been newly identified and was previously known as Avicularia versicolor. In German-speaking countries, it is also known as the “Martinique tree tarantula” due to its origin.

The relatively small species grows relatively quickly and is already an adult after two to two and a half years. It also changes its appearance in the process. Over time, the metallic blue spiderlings turn into turquoise, red and purple beauties.

To ensure that you can experience this development without any negative surprises, there are a few things you should bear in mind when keeping them. The animals need drops of water every two days to absorb water. You should therefore regularly spray some water into a corner of the container. However, care should be taken here as Caribena versicolor absolutely cannot tolerate waterlogging. A container with good air circulation and a substrate that can absorb moisture well is best. We use a mixture of forest humus and spaghnum moss in a ratio of 3:1.

A terrarium measuring 20 × 20 × 30 cm is recommended for an adult Caribena versicolor. Our complete jumping spider set is therefore also perfect for this species. The animals are happy to accept branches or cork bark placed diagonally in the terrarium to build their home in. They are not picky when it comes to food. They will accept anything that corresponds to their size. However, any leftover food should be removed immediately. Caribena versicolor is a very peaceful and calm species that is also recommended for beginners.
