Armadillidium gestroi – Robust and fascinating terrarium Isopods

Armadillidium gestroi is one of the most popular isopods for terrariums and isopod keeping. The species impresses with its calm behavior, its beautiful segment structure and its high adaptability. This makes it suitable for both beginners and experienced terrarium keepers.

The animals originally come from Southern Europemainly from Italy. There they live in warm habitats with plenty of hiding places. They can be found under stones, between leaves or in rotten wood. This environment can be recreated very well in the terrarium.

Typical for the genus Armadillidium is the ability to completely to curl up completely into a ball. This protective strategy also gave the animals their German name “Kugelasseln”. In case of danger, they immediately curl up to protect their sensitive lower body.

Armadillidium gestroi shows a beautiful, clearly recognizable segment structure. The animals often appear slightly shiny and have a calm, natural coloration. They look particularly decorative on bark, wood or foliage.

In the terrarium, these Isopods are usually active and curious. They come out of their hiding places more frequently, especially when the humidity is high or in the evening. This makes it easy to observe the animals as they walk through the substrate or feed on wood and leaves.

Suitable for keeping is a loose, nutrient-rich substrate. A mixture of forest humus, leaves and white rotten wood works particularly well. Foliage is an important source of food and should always be available.

Like many Isopods, Armadillidium gestroi also require a source of calcium. Cuttlefish shells or calcareous materials help to build up their stable shell.

A humidity gradient in the terrarium has also proved its worth. One part of the floor remains slightly damp, while another area remains drier. This allows the animals to choose the right area themselves.

Under good conditions, Armadillidium gestroi reproduce reliably. The females carry their eggs in a brood pouch under their body. After some time, tiny young appear, which are initially very light in color. With each moult they become darker and develop their typical markings.

Armadillidium gestroi also helps to decompose organic material. In this way, the animals support a stable microclimate in the terrarium.

If you are looking for a robust, interesting and useful isopod species Armadillidium gestroi is a very good choice. The animals combine function, movement and natural beauty in a small, fascinating terrarium inhabitant.
