Short description:
Porcellio succintus is an impressive isopod species. The body length of 2.8 cm and the body width of 1.5 cm make it the most bulky isopod species we currently offer. Males also have 1.5 cm long uropods and antennae. Thus we have a total length of 5.8 cm, which is really very impressive.
The colouration is a mixture of Porcellio spec. “Sevilla” and Porcellio flavomarginatus. The basic colouration and the white border of the segmental plates are very similar to the Porcellio species from Sevilla and the white body markings on the back are reminiscent of P. flavomarginatus.
Of course, this isopod species is not a hybrid of both species, but originates from southern Spain. There it is mainly found in areas where there is a high occurrence of limestone. Therefore, for this species too, it is important to lime the soil well, possibly offer limestone as hiding places and, of course, sepia on a permanent basis.
Temperature fluctuations within 16-30 °C pose no problems for Porcellio succintus outside the breeding season. The difficulty in successfully breeding Porcellio succintus lies in the breeding season. An adult female isopod has between 10 and 20 young per year under optimal conditions. This is very low compared to other species. The breeding season of Porcellio succintus is in summer. During this time, especially the females are sensitive to climatic changes and one should not try to make any changes during this phase.
However, if you ever manage to expand your existing breeding stock, you will have a great isopod species in your stock list.
