Piloctenus haematostoma

Piloctenus haematostoma, also known as the “Red Fang Spider”, is an extremely fascinating species of spider that usually has a body length of around 3 cm. Its body is characterised by a predominantly beige base colour, which is interspersed with dark and striking patterns. The striking red-coloured fangs, which give it its characteristic name, are particularly striking.

 

What makes this spider species particularly remarkable is its unique way of hunting. Piloctenus haematostoma is mainly nocturnal and moves skilfully on the ground to hunt its prey. They are characterised by extraordinary agility and are able to pursue and catch prey, including insects and other small invertebrates, extremely quickly.

 

Unlike some other spider species that rely on complex web structures, Piloctenus haematostoma does not build such structures. Instead, they prefer to hide in natural hiding places or behind bark. They also exhibit pronounced territorial behaviour and defend their territory extremely aggressively against potential intruders.
