Brachypelma auratum: The Mexican flame in your own terrarium
The Brachypelma auratum is an impressive sight among tarantulas. It is native to the dry regions of Mexico, where it lives in natural hiding places under stones and in burrows. This tarantula attracts attention with its striking red knees, which have earned it the name ‘Flame Knee’. The white leg rings are particularly striking and provide an attractive contrast to its otherwise darker appearance.
A suitable terrarium for an adult Brachypelma auratum should measure at least 30 x 30 x 30 cm. This provides sufficient space for the spider to move around and display typical behaviour. The substrate in the terrarium should be relatively dry to mimic the conditions of its natural habitat. A mixture of forest humus and sand in a 1:1 ratio helps to regulate the humidity and provides the spider with opportunities to burrow. The terrarium should also be furnished with natural hiding places, such as cork tubes, cork bark and other decorative wood and stones that serve as safe hiding places.
Artificial plants can also be added to make the terrarium more aesthetically pleasing and provide the spider with additional climbing options.
Brachypelma auratum requires a temperature of around 24-28°C, which can be achieved using a heat lamp. A low humidity of 40-50% is ideal, but this can vary slightly depending on the time of year and the climate in the room. A shallow bowl of water should always be available to ensure hydration.
The diet of Brachypelma auratum should consist mainly of live insects such as cockroaches, crickets and occasionally small grasshoppers. It is important that the food animals are clean and healthy to avoid disease transmission. Regular feeding every two weeks is sufficient, although the quantity and frequency should be adjusted if the spider is preparing for a moult or needs to regain its strength after one.
Keeping the Brachypelma auratum not only offers the opportunity to observe a fascinating animal, but also to learn more about the needs and behaviour of this special species of tarantula. With the right care, this spider can become a long-lasting and impressive companion in your home, offering insights into the complex world of arachnids.
